Making the Most of Your Deck or Patio this Spring

The View at Mill Run Blog, Owings Mills, MD We are back with more tips about using your deck or balcony space effectively at your apartment. Read on to learn more!

It’s March and spring is just around the corner here in Owings Mills, MD. What better time than now to spruce up your deck or patio at The View at Mill Run in anticipation of warmer weather. Adding comfortable seating, color, and plants and flowers will liven up that space, and today we have additional ideas including decor, toys, extending your apartment’s living space, and kissing — yes, kissing. Romeo and Juliet can’t have all the romance, right?

Decor/Display — Use the wall of the deck to create an eye-catching colorful display. Perhaps hang up a collection of kites or your grandfather’s rods and reels. A butterfly motif adds a splash of color, and with vinyl clings available, you don’t have to worry about damaging the walls. Add pinwheels for a touch of whimsy or windchimes to twinkle in the breeze.

Toys — Make a play station for a kid (or kid at heart). Use a weatherproof tote and store the toys you typically take to the park on your deck or patio: frisbees, bocce game, soccer ball, etc. They are ready to go at a moment’s notice, but aren’t taking up space indoors.

Living Space — When you are entertaining, use your deck or balcony to extend your living space. Set up a station for appetizers, drinks, or desserts, and guests can enjoy the view, the food, and the company. The deck or patio could also make a good place for you to pursue your hobby. If you’re an artist, perhaps it would be a good sketching place. Love to read? Put that comfy seating to work and enjoy the fresh air while you read your book.

Kissing — Decks are the perfect place to steal a kiss. As Romeo and Juliet know, they can add an element of romance. Perhaps you could share the famous balcony scene for a date night. A few lines from the scene attest to the romance found therein: “See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand! / O, that I were a glove upon that hand, / That I might touch that cheek!” Sigh. From ancient Verona to modern Owing Mills, MD, balconies are where it’s at.
